What rousing stir there is in knowing
A heart, like a star, can reach apogee
And in this empty expanse there is grace enough
To rocket from dumb poverty to richness?

To see again, a reminder
The glint of a peri’s eye or lilt of voice
Raw thrust to inspire, to confuse, to haunt
A simple functioning satellite’s plane of rotation

So there is no rational explanation for peace and rest
Charmed hearts transform
The simple and serene
To the mighty and dashing

Like solvents on old brass
Turning base metal into art
Which we gaze upon in jealous admiration
Inspired, in museums
And on facades in streets of ancient cities

But sometimes destroyed on atmospheric reentry
Just a flash of light and then gone
Like legions of slain warriors, without names
Or Venus settling into the sea
